Le Hibou Café, located at 521 Sussex Drive from 1961 to 1975, played an important part in the growth of Ottawa’s artistic community. Artists including Joni Mitchell, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, and Ottawa’s own Bruce Cockburn were just some of the many musicians to play there. Cockburn would go on to become a world-famous singer and a passionate activist for Indigenous rights and the environment.
