- 1914 – The year an elegant mansion was built in Rockcliffe for grocer S.J. Major whose brick and stone warehouse is still visible down York St. on the right. Later known as “Stornoway” the mansion has been the home of the leader of the official opposition since 1950.

- John Cundell, the well-known horse trader, lived opposite from the S.J. Major building (at 113-115 York St). Horses are still stabled here for horse drawn carriage rides.
