http:\/\/www.bytown.net\/bruyere.htm]<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original buildings completed between 1847-49 were located between Cathcart Street and Bolton Street (now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bruy\u00e8re Street). The Sisters of Charity devoted themselves to building barracks to house the sick and to provide for them essential services and care. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruy\u00e8re and the Sisters treated hundreds of patients with virtually no assistance. The mental and physical strain on the Sisters caused many to fall ill themselves, including Bruy\u00e8re. She writes about the hardships they faced in one of her letters:<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sisters are starting to feel exhausted. I do not know if they can hold out, being so few and receiving help from no one, especially to sit up at night \u2013Sr E. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruy\u00e8re<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u2013 July 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1847<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledgements:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This story was researched and developed by Kelsea McKenna as a contribution to the Workers&#8217; History Museum&#8217;s Capital History Kiosk&#8217;s project for Ottawa 2017.
