Kaye \/ Library and Archives Canada \/ C-010023<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As you look at this dramatic painting by artist Ross Rheaume you are witnessing an historic moment during the 1930s. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King was passing through the halls of the Parliament Building when he noticed a janitor wearing the crimson ribbon of the Victoria Cross.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>When the PM stopped and asked him about it, the janitor, Filip Konowal is reported to have said \u201cI mopped up overseas with a rifle and here I must mop up with a mop.\u201d Konowal soon found himself appointed as Personal Custodian to the Prime Minister\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-715 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.16.04-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"454\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.16.04-PM.png 454w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.16.04-PM-300x239.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>Cpl. Konowal, V.C.<br>Credit: Canada, Department of National Defence \/<br>Library and Archives Canada<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filip Konowal came to Canada to provide a better life for a family in the Ukraine that he would never see again. Konowal fought in the Great War, seeing action at Vimy Ridge, at Lens, at Hill 70. It was during this battle that he killed at least sixteen enemy soldiers, captured two machine gun positions, and suffered serious head wounds by sniper fire. He was awarded the Victoria Cross.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-714 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.18.26-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.18.26-PM.png 329w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.18.26-PM-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><em>Ottawa Journal<\/em>, July 21, 1919<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Konowal was chosen to lead Ottawa\u2019s first peace parade in 1919 but the very next day he murdered a man in Hull, Quebec. Found not-guilty on grounds of insanity, he spent over seven years in a Montreal asylum. Released in 1928, Konowal found work on Parliament Hill thanks to the intervention and support of friends and former soldiers. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acknowledgments<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This story was researched by William Teal as a contribution to the Workers&#8217; History Museum&#8217;s Capital History Kiosk&#8217;s project for Ottawa 2017.
