Frank Crosby and James A. Carruthers. As the advertisement you are looking at suggests, they specialized in \u201cdry goods\u201d and were the modern pre-curser to a department store, selling wholesale fabric, ties, hats, shirts etc. In 1902, an apartment building was added at the rear, called Somerset Apartments.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-725 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.21-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.21-PM.png 384w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.21-PM-209x300.png 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In the 1930s, the building was purchased by C.W. Mitchell, one of the founders of The Ottawa Free Press. Ownership passed to his son Edgar\u00a0and the building\u00a0became the Ritz Hotel, which featured a dining salon and dance hall.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-726 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.32-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.32-PM.png 355w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.35.32-PM-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>In the 1970s its basement became a jazz lounge called C.W.\u2019s which featured not only jazz but Celtic punk.
