Theatre opened at the corner of Bank Street and Second Avenue on Saturday 17 November 1928. Reportedly the first movie theatre in Ottawa to show \u201ctalkies\u201d, the theatre was on the cutting edge of new sound technology. Its opening warranted a three-page spread in The Ottawa Journal, which declared that the \u201catmospheric effect is astounding\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The opening night featured screen, stage, and orchestra performances. \u201cTo greet and serve our patrons properly\u201d, Nolan announced, the theatre offered the services of uniformed attendants, young men who had received \u201cphysical training, schooling in courtesy, instruction in first aid\u2026\u201d and who\u00a0<\/p><p>would refuse gratuities because they were \u201chosts\u201d.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-735 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.16-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.16-PM.png 558w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.16-PM-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ottawa Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nov. 23, 1929<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The theatre building was inspired by Spanish architecture, as is evident from this exterior view. On the inside, the stage was set off with \u201cstately Moorish drapes\u201d and featured a vaulted ceiling painted like the midnight sky, equipped with 150 small light bulbs to recreate a starry night. This night-sky even included projected clouds, using a machine called the Brenkert Master Brenograph. J. Nolan, and was one of three in his repertoire in Ottawa, which included The Empress and The Columbia. P. J. Nolan later went on to run and succeed as the Mayor of Ottawa in the 1930s. His son, P. Ambrose Nolan, was manager of The Avalon on its opening.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-733 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.50-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.50-PM.png 586w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.47.50-PM-300x122.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: Library and Archives Canada<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 1931, four workmen employed by The Avalon, The Colombia, and the Rexy appeared in court charged with illegal picketing outside The Avalon. Members of the International Union Operators and Stage Hands\u2019 Union (Local 257), they had been picketing to protest owner P.J. Nolan\u2019s firing of two of them and their replacement by non-union employees from Hamilton. Two women testified that they had been struck by signboards carried by the men and business owners complained about the blocking of the sidewalk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P. Ambrose Nolan testified that they carried their signs in a \u201cslovenly manner.\u201d The four men were fined $10. \u00a0In our installation the picket line is wonderfully imagined by artist Ross Rheaume.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-732 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.48.05-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.48.05-PM.png 530w, https:\/\/capitalhistory.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-12-05-at-10.48.05-PM-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Avalon Theatre closed its doors in 1956 (although by this time, it had changed ownership and was now called the Glebe Theatre.) Although nothing much remains of the theatre apart from its stucco exterior, it\u2019s original layout explains the curious juxtaposition of a double-entranced hardware store (occupying the original auditorium) and a Mexican restaurant (occupying the original foyer and ticket office).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More importantly, The Avalon remains in the memories of many.
