The Lord Elgin \u2013 or LE as it was known \u2013 became a safe place for gay people in Canada to socialize. As Carleton University journalism professor told the Ottawa Citizen\u2019s Kelly Egan, \u201cit\u2019s a badge of honour for the hotel.\u201d <i>(Kelly Egan, \u201cThe straight good on the Lord Elgin\u2019s pioneering gay bar\u201d March 1, 2016.)<\/i> By the 1970s it was not only a meeting place, but a centre for gay activism in the city.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>One resident told Egan that the hotel \u201cwas a place where self-accepting gay men could meet other self-accepting gay men. It wasn\u2019t like other taverns or bars where you had to hide who you were.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Yet, patrons knew they were being spied upon by RCMP officers, often hidden behind newspapers. Perhaps the most notorious instrument of repression was the so-called fruit machine, which, in the words of an RCMP report, \u201ccould discover homosexual tendencies in applicants for government positions.\u201d A member of the community informed researchers \u201cI knew of a machine\u2026. It was almost like word association, a pictorial, like pictures and stuff like that\u2026.\u201d. The National Gay Rights Conference took place in 1975, and the National Lesbian Conference a year later. Gays of Ottawa, founded in 1971, created a centre, a helpline, and a periodical.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public picnics became regular events from 1986 and Ottawa\u2019s first Pride Parade was held in 1989. Capital Xtra began publishing in 1993. \u00a0Researchers like Glenn Crawford have been uncovering the history of Ottawa\u2019s LGBTQ+ community through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagelegacy.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Village Legacy Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Acknowledgments<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This story was researched by Dany Guay-Belanger as a contribution to the Workers&#8217; History Museum&#8217;s Capital History Kiosk&#8217;s project for Ottawa 2017.
